Line Transversals to Translates of Unit Discs

Let F be a family of convex figures in the plane. We say that F has property T if there exist a line intersecting every member of F . Also, we say that the family F has property T (k) if every k−membered subfamily of F has property T . In this talk we will give some results concerning families of translates of the unit disc which have property T (3) or T (4).

Helly-Type Theorems for Line Transversals to Disjoint Unit Balls

We prove Helly-type theorems for line transversals to disjoint unit balls in R. In particular, we show that a family of n > 2d disjoint unit balls in R has a line transversal if, for some ordering ≺ of the balls, any subfamily of 2d balls admits a line transversal consistent with ≺. We also prove that a family of n > 4d − 1 disjoint unit balls in R admits a line transversal if any subfamily of ...

Transversals to line segments in R3

We completely describe the structure of the connected components of transversals to a collection of n arbitrary line segments in R. We show that n 3 line segments in R admit 0, 1, . . . , n or infinitely many line transversals. In the latter case, the transversals form up to n connected components.

From invariants to predicates: example of line transversals to lines

This work explores a method that reduces the design of evaluation strategies for geometric predicates to the computation of polynomial invariants of a group action. We apply it to the classical problem of counting line transversals to lines in P and capture polynomials previously obtained by more pedestrian approaches.
